What is an armchair expert?

An armchair expert is someone who knows a lot about a subject, but typically has little or no practical experience. So it has nothing to do with furniture, unless the armchair expert in question has specialised knowledge (or at least thinks they do!) of armchairs.

London 2012 and the armchair expert…

Traditionally, the Olympic Games is a huge occasion for armchair experts, giving them an opportunity to celebrate their knowledge of a wide variety of sports at the same time, and London 2012 is as good a chance as any. Where else, other than firmly seated in an armchair, will you find someone who expounds their expertise as confidently as a well-qualified coach on such contrasting sporting activities as shooting, kayaking, cycling and the women’s 800m?

Mark Cavendish goes for gold…

I recently enjoyed the company of an armchair expert who was glued to the men’s cycling road race in the run up to a family gathering. It was pretty useful to have our very own commentator assuring us that we were “on track for gold” and everything was “going to plan”, thereby avoiding the need for anyone else to watch avidly as the guys fought for their places around Richmond Park.

Until the final lap, our armchair expert provided reassurance that Mark Cavendish was living up to the gold medal expectations that had been widely foisted upon him, despite the gruelling Tour de France challenge he and the team took part in only earlier.

‘There might be a problem here’

At some point on the way to the Mall, our expert’s tone changed rather dramatically as he began hinting that there “might be a problem”. In the end, as Team GB fell back so far that even Mark Cavendish’s infamous sprint finish couldn’t bring forth a medal, our armchair expert succumbed to the mickey taking and blame that is inevitable among friends and family when predications fail.

Luckily, even though at the time of posting us Brits are still waiting for their first Olympic Gold in 2012, it turned out that our own armchair expert was, in fact, a very good sport after all, taking our jibes in the spirit in which they were meant!
