How to protect the arms on your armchairs and sofas

Armchairs and sofas can be beautiful additions to a living space, so it’s a great idea to do all you can to protect them from harm. One way to do this is to get arm covers that are a perfect fit for your sofa or chair. Sounds expensive? Not at all – because you can make them yourself!

How to make arm covers for armchairs or sofas…

The clever people at www.upholsterycourse.com have produced this video to show you how it’s done.

Ten steps to arm cover success!

To make it easier for you to follow, we’ve written down the instructions in 10 easy steps:

    1. Lay your fabric over the arm.

    2. Make sure any patterns are going in the right direction.

    3. Pin the fabric into place.

    4. Mark the centre of the fabric, and the edge of the chair, with standard chalk. Then put to one side.

    5. Put another piece of fabric on the end of the arm and follow steps ii-iv.

    6. Allowing a space for sewing, cut in the shape of your chalk marks on both pieces.

    7. Machine sew the pieces together on the edges.  Then turn around and sew the other way.

    8. To make it look neater, top sew along the seam.  Pull the material apart to avoid gathering underneath.

    9. Lay the fabric on the arm and make sure it is straight.  Mark the other end of the arm pad with chalk to indicate where you will need to cut.

    10. Roll your fabric in to give a nice edge, then sew and fit it to your chair

Match your arm covers with existing furnishings

There are other videos to show you how to re-cover a whole chair, but if you don’t want to go to the expense and time of this, or if you just want to do something to extend the life of new armchairs or sofas, then this is a fabulous chance to get really creative with arm covers.

For example, if you have a plain coloured armchair or sofa, you could add arm covers that fit in with the colour scheme of the room, or match your cushions. In fact, you could even make cushion covers to match! Similarly, if your chair or sofa is patterned, you could use one of the colours from the pattern to make plain arm covers that complement the armchair or sofa beautifully.

Using cushion covers to add colour when getting a new sofa

If you’re thinking of getting a new sofa but are not sure which colour to choose, then read on…

There is a multitude of shades available to anyone looking at sofas for sale in the UK, but sometimes the colour choice can seem overwhelming. Also, you may have decorated your room with a colour scheme that you are not likely to keep for more than a few years. So, if you’re looking at spending money on a new sofa, wouldn’t it be great if you knew you were buying something that will outlast your existing decor?

Instead of spending time deliberating which colour sofa to buy,

you could consider a neutral shade instead that will allow you to add colour through accessories such as cushions. Then, when you get the urge to decorate again, you won’t have to worry about the financial outlay of a new sofa, because you would only need to get new cushions.

Choosing the right cushions can add a real ‘wow’ factor to your whole room.If this is what you are looking for, it’s worth giving your time to having a proper look at the range of cushion designs available to buyers in the UK.If you can’t find what you’re looking for, you might like to consider buying some fabric and making your own cushion covers, which can be extremely satisfying for anyone with a bit of crafty flair.

Here’s a video that explains clearly how you can do this in simple steps. The video covers how to make a cushion cover where the cushion pad is sewn in, and also looks at how to make an envelope cushion, which gives the option of removing the cover for washing, etc.

Whether you choose to add colour to your room through the fabric or leather of your new sofa, or through accessories such as cushions, we hope you will be happy with your new purchase for many years to come.
